WebCysteine is the rate-limiting substrate in the synthetic pathway for glutathione in the eye. Glutathione is an antioxidant that protects crystallins in the eye from reactive oxygen species; denatured crystallins can lead to cataracts. Cystathionase is also a target for reactive oxygen species. WebCystathionine β-synthase (CBS) is a key enzyme in the two-step biosynthesis of cysteine from homocysteine and serine and requires vitamin B 6 for its catalysis ( Fig. 39.1 ). This is the only pathway in humans that leads to cysteine production. This pathway competes for homocysteine with homocysteine remethylation by MS in the methyl cycle pathway.
